Learn about 4CS
The 4Cs refer to a global standard for the four primary characteristics of a diamond: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. Color measures a diamond’s absence of color. Clarity considers a diamond’s inclusions and blemishes and how they affect its appearance. Cut describes the diamonds fire, brilliance and proportions. Carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs in metric carats. These characteristics interact to produce the beauty and sparkle that make diamonds so attractive.
Carat: This refers to the weight of the diamond. Larger diamonds tend to be more valuable, but other factors also play a significant role. The weight or size of a diamond is measured in carats (ct.).One carat weighs 1/5 of a gram and is divided into 100 points, so a diamond weighing 1.07 ct. is referred to as “one carat and seven points.”For example,
0.75 carat = 75 points
1/2 carat = 50 points
1/4 carat = 25 points
When diamonds are mined, large gems are discovered much less frequently than small ones, which makes large diamonds much more valuable. Diamond prices rise exponentially with carat weight. So, a 2-carat diamond of a given quality is always worth more than two 1-carat diamonds of the same quality.
Cut: Cut is not just about the shape of the diamond but mainly concerns the proportions, symmetry, and polish. A well-cut diamond maximizes the reflection and refraction of light, creating brilliant sparkle and fire. Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.
Color: Color refers to the absence of color in a diamond. The highest grade is D, representing a completely colorless diamond. As the color grade progresses towards Z, the diamond shows more and more yellow or brown hues, reducing its value.
Clarity: This pertains to the presence of internal and external flaws or inclusions in the diamond. The fewer and less visible the flaws, the higher the clarity grade and the more valuable the diamond.Clarity assesses the presence of internal and external flaws or inclusions. The highest clarity grades, such as FL (Flawless) and IF (Internally Flawless), have no visible inclusions even under 10x magnification. Lower clarity grades like VS (Very Slightly Included) and SI (Slightly Included) have minor inclusions that may or may not be visible to the naked eye.
These four factors are crucial in determining the quality, beauty, and price of a diamond.
